You likely don’t think of shoes when you heard the word technology. Which is why so many at this year’s eMerge America’s Tech Expo were so surprised to see a Ilene Berg shoes front and center. “I thought, ‘what do shoes have to do with tech,'” one eMerge attendee told me. “Then I realized it was actually pretty smart, they stood out among the tech companies.”
If you’re busy applying for jobs, it’s common practice to include a link to your LinkedIn page for prospective employers to get a better feel for your background. If you currently have a profile URL consisting of your name and a long string of numbers, you probably would like to have something a bit more professional looking as well as easy to use. Today, a contact of mine noticed my custom LinkedIn URL and asked for me to help them set up theirs. Even though it’s a simple process, finding where to go can be tricky if you don’t know where to look. Hopefully this quick guide will help.

Why are there so few women in tech leadership roles?
According to a recent Reuters study, 30% of 450 technology executives stated that their groups had no women in leadership positions. Only 25% of the IT jobs in the US were filled by women and considering the fact that 56% of women leave IT in the highlight of their career, it’s no surprise that there’s so few women leading the tech industry.
The value of having women in leadership is common sense – women make up half of the purchasing demographic so having limited or no representation of women leading companies can make them miss out on valuable insight. This common sense is backed by a study by a DDI consulting firm that found the top 20% of top-performing companies had 27% or more women in key leadership positions while the bottom 20% of companies had less than 19% of women in these roles.
We asked women in leadership roles to share their experience in the tech space, everything from why they chose a career in tech to perks/challenges of being a woman in a male-dominated industry to advice for young women considering tech as a career. When it comes to powerful business tools like Salesforce or Marketo, small businesses may want access but either can’t afford the high price point. Along with that, lower tier plans a small business might be able to afford often include a bare-bones version of the platform, stripping away key productivity features. Want just your marketing person to have access to the Salesforce marketing tools? You’ll have to upgrade all of your users (and pay significantly more a month) just for one person to have access to the tools they need to successfully do their job.

For many, the excitement of working at a startup is worth the risks. Unless you’re working for a unicorn startup (which, is it really even still considered a startup at that point?), it often requires longer hours, a cut in pay, and less benefits.
