Making Sense of MOOC Dropout Rates via Text Mining with Laura Gabrysiak

October 24 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm

In conjunction with R-Ladies Miami, the Miami Data Science Meetup is proud to present Laura Gabrysiak at a new (for us) venue, the Cambridge Innovation Center.

Within the past few years, Massive Online Open Courses (MOOCs), have experienced a sudden rise in popularity, reaching thousands of students across the globe and bridging limitations that higher education has experienced until present. Despite their great potential, a high student drop-out phenomenon (96%) has been regularly reported over the years. This presentation will showcase a project that identified reasons behind the high student drop-out phenomenon applying Sentiment Analysis and other Text Mining techniques to course reviews using R.

Speaker: Laura Gabrysiak is a Data Scientist who recently moved to Miami from Berlin where she lived the past 12 years. She graduated from the University of Potsdam and Humboldt University of Berlin, where she obtained a B.Sc in Computational Linguistics and a M.Sc in Information Systems specializing in Text Mining. She also holds a Design Thinking certificate from the Design Thinking School at HPI Potsdam. She has worked at several companies including the German Research Centre for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI), SAP and Lovion GmbH. She is a strong believer of combining qualitative and quantitative methods to tackle complex problems!

Pay parking is available in the lot outside the CIC on 7th Ave.
