Here’s what San Francisco looked like in the 1800’s if Google Maps Existed

Ready to hop in the DeLorean and head back to San Francisco, circa 1800’s? Two coders (@danvdk and @ravejk) will help get you there. Using the vast resource of photos from the San Francisco Public Library, they’ve created an interactive map of the old images on Google Maps. Plus, on your time traveling expedition you’re able to take a modern luxury like Google Maps along for the ride.

The project started when @danvdk discovered a photo in the archives was mislabeled and was actually taken on his roof! With this, he created an interactive slider using the photo from 1945 and present day. Surprisingly, the change wasn’t that different. He began adding the photos to the map using geocoding and eventually the project was formed.
