Microsoft Releases .Net as an Open Source Platform

Open, Accessible and Cross-Platform

The entire .Net server stack is available in open source, including ASP.net, the .Net complier, .Net Core Runtime, Framework and Libraries.  This will allow developers to use .Net across Windows, Mac or Linux.

Visual Studio Free for Developers

Along with making .Net open source, the tools needed to build .Net applications are now free with Visual Studio Community 2013. This edition is fully featured and includes full extensibility. The free edition is only for nonenterprise application development.

With .Net becoming an open source platform, developers with .Net expertise are sure to increase. Whether it will affect salaries for .Net developer remains to be seen.

What are your thoughts on .Net now being available as an open source platform?
