According to a recent study by Dice, discrimination continues to be a big problem in tech. Tech professionals reported they’ve experienced or witnessed discrimination, with the highest reported being ageism. 29% of respondents reported age discrimination in the workplace, followed by gender (21%), political affiliation (11%) and sexual orientation (6%).
In the past, we’ve discussed the vast benefits of diversity within tech teams – including gender and racial diversity. Various studies indicate that companies with good diversity perform better than companies that are less diverse. However, a conversation that seems to still be needed is the importance of multi-generational teams.
Silicon Valley and the tech industry on a whole has a long-standing problem with diversity and inclusion. It’s an issue that’s often swept under the rug with many tech leaders simply claiming they hire the best, and if they happen to be male and white, that’s just how it is.
